Is a Vitalize Peel right for me?
You may want to consider a Vitalize peel if:
* You are using good skin care products but your skin still needs a boost.
* Your skin is dry and dull.
* You have regular facials but still no glow!
* You have mild to moderate acne.
* Your acne is deep and glycolic chemical peels don’t go that deep.
* You have always had pigment and some peels can make it worse.
* You have very sensitive skin.
* You have not been happy with other peels in the past
* Your skin looks great but you want to keep it that way and encourage cellular turnover.
If you said yes to any of the statements listed above then a Vitalize peel could be just the cost effective treatment you need. The Vitalize peel is a mild to moderate cosmeceutical (physician office use only) acid based chemical peel by Skin Medica and is designed to penetrate through to the dermis. This degree of penetration will have an effect on cellular turnover, degree of oiliness and pigment. Anytime the epidermis and dermis is targeted, immediate and longer lasting results can mean a clearer and fresher skin tone as well as texture.
All skin types can benefit from a Vitalize peel, however, with darker skin tones, precautions are taken to prevent any possible pigment changes. Following the application of a Vitalize peel, the impact at the epidermal level will typically be seen within a few days. Actual skin shedding, which may be microscopic, will remove dead skin cells. These dead cells can contribute to a dry appearance or a patchy complexion. Excess oils will also be eliminated. At the dermal level, retinoic acid can be an acne preventative and accelerate new cell growth. These dermal effects will result in more lasting epidermal improvement with oil control and more youthful skin cells.
Having regular Vitalize peels and using good skin products will certainly enhance the overall complexion, but, just as regular use of any product can result in diminished return, at Laser Skin Solutions we recommend a variety of different treatment options to create that same glowing result we all desire. And it is fun to change treatment protocols and choose from the ever growing beauty box!

End-of-Summer Blues
Carefree days at the beach, warm evenings outside with friends, and family vacations are a few of the joys of summer. It’s a time when we recharge and are reminded of what is truly important in life. Yet with Labor Day behind us, the season is quickly coming to a close.
Some people begin to feel an end-of-summer melancholy this time of year.
While families are consumed with the back-to-school frenzy, the transition back to work can also be particularly stressful as pressures mount at the office.
Researchers call this end-of-summer funk Post Vacation Syndrome (PVS). It can stir up a unique range of emotions, including irritability, anxiety, lack of motivation, difficulty concentrating and a feeling of emptiness. While it usually lasts only a few days or weeks, some people experience a mild version of PVS every Sunday night after a relaxing weekend away from the office.
Do not despair! There are many ways to beat your end-of-summer blues. The following ideas will ensure glorious, autumn days ahead!
• Savor the Summer – Don’t lament what you didn’t accomplish, such as reading five books or paining the house. Share your summer highlights, even small ones, with friends and family.
• Be Active – Studies show exercise helps relieve the blues.
• Foods for Moods – Eating foods with omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B-12 and vitamin D may be uplifting to your mood.
• Shopping the Farmers’ Market – Take advantage of the healthy autumn produce the local farmers offer, including squashes, persimmons, pomegranates, radicchio and sweet potatoes.
• Take Stock at Work – Are you in a rut at work? Pinpoint what is bothering you and make a change.
• Schedule Fun – Plan long weekends away, spend time with friends, go for a walk in the cool, crisp air, and shop the new fall fashions – basically anything that gives you joy.
Have a beautiful fall season!
Read the full article, titled, “The Post-Labor Day Letdown” in the Wall Street Journal.
We hope this helps (a little) to cure your end-of-summer blues!

Trust your Intuition
It’s the moment you know you should not purchase that last pair of boots after a full day of shopping. It’s the moment you do not eat one last cookie at the end of the day. It’s the moment you tell a friend you love her dress, in order to spare her feelings.
This is your intuition talking. Being aware and truly listening to it can help guide your life.
According to social psychologist Dr. Gerd Gigerenzer, a gut instinct is a judgment that is fast. It comes quickly into a person’s consciousness. The person doesn’t know why they have this feeling. Yet, this is strong enough to make an individual act on it.
Dr. Gigerenzer is the director of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin and is known in social science circles for his breakthrough studies on the nature of intuitive thinking. He was able to show how aspects of intuition work and how ordinary people successfully use it in modern life.
Malcolm Gladwell is another psychologist who studied how our brains work and how we make decisions. He explored how we think without thinking and about choices we make in an instant. He also looked at why the best decisions are often the most impossible to explain.
Both Gigerenzer and Gladwell have written books on the topic. Dr. Gigerenzer’s book is titled, “Gut Feelings: The Intelligence of the Unconscious,” and Mr. Gladwell’s book is titled, “Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking.”
Think of paying attention to your intuition as a gift you can give yourself.
The more you listen to intuition, the better it will guide you throughout your life.

Laser Hair Removal – Missed Opportunity?
Cathi De Thomas, CME Medical Esthetician
In Florida, laser hair removal treatments continue to be a busy part of our business all year round.
But some people only think of laser hair removal when it is blazing hot and they are putting on a bathing suit! For most of us, our kids have gone back to school and the summer is officially over this Labor Day weekend. Thankfully we can retire the summer shorts and swimsuits until next season. Does that mean you shouldn’t start your laser hair removal treatments now?
Of course not! This is the best time to begin your journey. Just think, no more razor bumps, rashes, dark spots or ingrown hairs can be a thing of the past! No more choosing clothing based on covering up unwanted hair. Even better, no waxing or tweezing hair after a series of laser hair removal treatments.
Since hairs grow in different cycles, laser hair removal is a process, rather than a one-time only treatment.
And the treatments have to be spaced far enough apart (usually 6-8 week intervals) in order to catch those hairs at the optimal time for treatment. That means, that now is the perfect time to start treating your bikini, underarms and legs with laser hair removal. By the time next summer rolls around, you will have had the benefit of several laser hair removal treatments, and can enjoy your hair-free results! Many patients start with one body part and they are so thrilled that they continue laser hair removal treatments on to other body parts!
At Laser Skin Solutions, we have the most experience and the best laser for the South Florida climate. An important thing to mention is that the laser is attracted to the pigment (color) in the hair. So the dark coarse hair is the best to treat, medium brown hair will possibly need a few extra treatments and blond and white hair cannot be treated. This is the reason that we have both laser and IPL devices to treat the widest range of hair color and regardless of your skin color; we can SAFELY and EFFECTIVELY remove unwanted hair on most areas of the body. So get started with your laser hair removal treatments now, and be smooth and hair-free by Memorial Day 2012!

What’s in that Skin Care Lotion?
Can a moisturizer really change your skin, make it look younger, smoother, softer? We are bombarded with so much advertising hype in regards to skin care products that it is amazing we can make any choices at all! Let’s sort out the fact from the fiction on what CAN really change your skin for the better.
Can Skin Care lotions make the skin surface seem moist and plump?
Humectants are ingredients that attract water molecules to the skin, and in that way can make the skin surface seem moist and plump. The most commonly used humectants are Glycerin, Hyalauronic acid, Propylene Glycerol, Urea or Sorbitol, to name a few. The effects of these ingredients are temporary, since they are only coating the skin and cannot penetrate the epidermis (top or outer layer) of the skin because their molecules are too large.
Occlusives are ingredients that slow moisture loss from the skin. Mineral oil, Squalane, Tocopherol, Paraffin, Beeswax, Lanolin, or Dimethicone are all occlusive ingredients. Some feel greasy, like mineral oil, while others are potential irritants, such as lanolin. All have very large molecules that cannot penetrate the skin, so again, their effects are temporary.
Emollients are the ingredients that help to fill in the “cracks”, so to speak. Emollients can very slightly penetrated the “stratum corneum”, which is the top layer of dead skin cells. It helps to fill up the areas between the cells, giving the skin a smoother feel. Some of the occlusives are also emollients as well, such as Lanolin and Dimethecone. Emollient molecules are still to large to penetrate anything below the stratum corneum layer, and are therefore temporary.
So if these skin care ingredients have only temporary effects, is there anything out there that can be applied topically to really penetrate and improve the skin?
Of course – “active ingredients”, which are not usually found in over-the-counter products. These ingredients include the range of Peptides, Antioxidants and Growth Factors, and are most often found in cosmeceutical products. Some of our favorite skin care products are from Skin Medica™ and Jan Marini.
While some over-the-counter skin care products claim to contain active ingredients, the amount of these ingredients are usually too small to really have an effect on the skin. In cosmeceutical formulations, the active ingredients in these skin care products are very concentrated, and often applied as a separate serum rather than being mixed into a moisturizer. This type of formulation is much stronger, with smaller molecules that will penetrate the skin to create long-terms changes in the skin.
The most common active ingredients cosmeceuticals today are: Vitamin C, Peptides, Growth Factors and Retinoids. All of these ingredients can promote collagen and elastin formation, which plumps the skin from the bottom up. They can also protect the skin from free-radical damage, which is potentially aging and cancer-causing. Active ingredients in skin care products can promote cell turnover, regulate oil production, even out pigmentation and ultimately make the skin look firmer, more even in tone and texture and more youthful looking.
Skin care products such as TNS Essential Serum from Skin Medica, or CRX C Serum from Obagi are formulations that can really penetrate, creating a more healthy and youthful looking skin. At Laser Skin Solutions we offer a free consultation to educate our patients as to what will give them the best anti-aging results.

EATING FOR HEALTH
By Cathi DeThomas, CME
Just found a new (to me!) app for my smart phone – a handy little program that allows me to set a goal in terms of weight loss or maintenance, record my consumption of food during each day, enter any exercise I performed and note my subsequent weight loss (or gain). Losing weight is not a goal for me, but maintaining a healthy body is, and I am delighted that this particular little app is turning out to be such fun, as well as fountain of information on my particular eating habits.
Examples, anyone?? Well, although I may be somewhat of a vegetarian and proponent of organic, fresh foods whenever possible, I still manage to consume a fair amount of JUNK food. Is eating fresh, chunky salsa and organic white corn tortilla chips for dinner really that healthy?
According to Michael Pollan (author and journalist) in his book, “Food Rules”, populations that eat the so-called Western diet, with it’s emphasis on processed meats and foods, overload of fats and sugars, and refined carbohydrates like white flour and sugar, can enjoy much higher rates of Western diseases like Type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Conversely, populations that get off the Western diet and eat more traditional diets can lower rates of these same chronic diseases!
Many people cite cost as the reason they are not purchasing more healthful foods, but in reality, it does not cost more in actual dollars – the real cost could be in prep time, since most healthy choices are NOT pre-packaged, processed foods, or fast foods either. However, putting together a fresh salad from a bagged mix, and adding your own grilled chicken breast strips and home-made vinaigrette dressing is truly not that time-consuming, and is probably cheaper than purchasing the fattier, more processed salad from McBurgerBell! Making a big pot of vegetable or beef soup on a Saturday afternoon with the kids helping out is a much more enjoyable way of educating them to healthy eating, and you have enough left to freeze for a future meal.
The true cost of our Western diet can be measured in health care dollars, according to G. A. Colditz in his article “Economic Costs of Obesity and Inactivity”. He states, “direct costs for obesity defined as body mass index greater than 30, in 1995, total 70 BILLION dollars.”
The cost of eating healthy? You will look better, feel better AND have lower health care costs in the long run!
Improve Your Mood – The “Good Food” Diet
You are what you eat, but did you know that your mood might also be a reflection of the foods you consume? New research is showing that particular foods can impact your mood. Dr. Richard Wurtman, distinguished professor of Neuroscience at MIT, studies nutrition and the brain. He has found that nutrients in foods are precursors to neurotransmitters in our brains.
In fact, eating carbohydrates, such as whole-wheat bread, pasta, or a bagel, increases your brain’s level of serotonin, a hormone that improves mood. This may explain why we crave carbs after a long day. And researchers at the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago
found that when they gave families garlic bread at dinner, there were 22 percent fewer negative remarks – and 8 percent more positive ones – than when families received no aromatic accompaniment.
Other foods to improve your mood include:
• Walnuts – Good source of omega-3 fatty acids that support mood-lifting brain function
• Ricotta cheese – Made of whey protein that improves your ability to think in stressful situations
• Salmon – High in Vitamin D, which can increase serotonin and improve mood. Also high in omega-3 fatty acids.
• Oatmeal – High in soluble fiber that slows the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream and provides a positive impact on mood
• Dark Chocolate – Packed with anandamide, the same feel-good chemical associated with a post-exercise buzz

Shine the Light on Acne
Any successful acne treatment with a goal of clearing and controlling, needs to address causative factors. When skin cells develop abnormally in the presence of P.acnes (bacteria that causes acne) and the overproduction of hormones, an inflammatory process occurs. The process can lead to the 3 categories of eruptions:1) comedones, 2) papules and pustules, 3) cysts and nodules.
The first step in treatment is gentle but effective cleansing of the acne areas.
Products containing salicylic, lactic or glycolic acid have the chemical capacity to dissolve clogging oils and should be used twice daily.
Secondly, an antibacterial approach will target P. acnes.
Benzoyl Peroxide has long been used because it produces oxygen in the sebum that inhibits growth as P.acnes thrives in an oxygen free environment. Topical and oral antibiotics are also treatment options alone or in combination and particularly indicated with cystic or nodular lesions. Narrow-band phototherapy will additionally destroy P.acnes through photo destruction and can be used alone or with combination therapies. According Alexiades-Armenakas, a New York based dermatologist, who uses the Lumenis ClearLight, “Just exposing the patient’s skin to this high-intensity light for 15 minutes will result in the elimination of bacteria that cause acne“.
Thirdly, the use of topical retinoids is considered the gold standard in acne treatment.
This approach is also highly recommended for the acne sufferer who desires an anti-aging program. Topical strengths very and should be individualized pending tolerance. UVA and UVB sunblocks are necessary for any and all treatment options as sun sensitivity will be increased.
The most successful acne treatments are those that are followed! Patient understanding and simplified treatments will facilitate greater compliance. The newer combination topicals that minimize the number of products required have gained popularity. One such product is Jan Marini’s Duality MD that combines Retinol and Benzol Peroxide. This product combined with Light Therapy will further enhance results. Goal orientated treatments that are simple, that will clear and control acne are what is necessary to manage an age-old and common skin problem.
At Laser Skin Solutions we offer a free consultation to personalize a treatment program that tailored to the individual patients needs in controlling acne.

Sleep is More Important than Food
Why is sleep one of the first things we’re willing to sacrifice as the demands in our lives increase?
Out of our fundamental physical needs — food, sleep and exercise — sleep is the most important. If you nearly starved yourself for one week, you would feel weak and lose weight, yet overall you would be fine. If you did not exercise for one week, you may feel lethargic, yet you would also be fine. However, your body would not be able to sustain severe sleep deprivation for one week. You would not be able to think clearly or function properly.
Yet, we continue to live by a remarkable myth: sleeping one hour less each night will give us one more hour of productivity each day. In reality, research suggests that even small amounts of sleep deprivation takes a significant toll on our mood, our productivity, our cognitive capacity and our health.
Most people need at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Staying awake longer than 18 consecutive hours reduces your reaction time, short-term and long-term memory, ability to focus, decision-making capacity, cognitive speed and spatial orientation. Accumulated sleep deficit — by only getting five or six hours of sleep a night for several days in a row — magnifies these negative effects.
Harvard Business Review Author Tony Schwartz has gathered much research about the importance of sleep. He also cites several famous studies on sleep including Anders Ericcson’s study of violinists.
Tony Schwartz provides the following tips for making sleep a higher priority in your life:
1. Go to bed earlier, and at a set time.
2. Start winding down 45 minutes before you turn off the light.
3. Write down what is on your mind – especially unfinished to-do’s and unresolved issues – just before you go to bed.

YOGA + VEGGIES = GOOD BONES!
I am often asked why I took up yoga at this point in my life. It would be safe to say I had something of an epiphany when I observed my (then) 79 year old mother as she was walking – looking somewhat fragile and stooped over. The handwriting was on the wall, and I realized I needed some kind of program to prevent (fingers crossed!) this from happening to me. Having exhausted other avenues of exercise due to injury and boredom, yoga seemed a perfect fit – increased flexibility, muscle tone and strength, especially for the upper body.
Well, it seems I chose well for another reason, too. According to the National Institute of Health, an estimated 10 million Americans have osteoporosis, with an additional 34 million suffering with osteopenia,. Yet, according to a small study conducted by Loren Fishman, MD, assistant clinical professor at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, practicing yoga for only 10 minutes daily led to an increase in bone density in 85% of the study participants. Like other weight-bearing exercise, yoga stresses the bones, forcing them to lay down new growth without stressing joints or damaging cartilage.
Diet plays an important role in bone health as well. Lynda Frassetto, MD is a kidney-disease specialist at the University of California, San Fransisco who compared how protein intake impacts bone density. Comparing data on diet and hip-fracture from 33 countries, she found a direct correlation between high consumption of animal protein and higher number of hip fractures in women over the age of 50. Yet another reason to lower your intake of meat, and increase the fruits and veggies!
Be smart – if you already exercise, then adding yoga to your daily routine is a great way to safely increase your bone density. However, if you have osteopenia or osteoporosis and want to begin practicing yoga, find an experienced teacher who can take these things in to account and help you create a safe, beneficial practice.
Our philosophy at Laser Skin Solutions is to beautify both inside and out! For more information, enjoy this article at Yoga Journal.com
